Everyone has different personality traits; some are all about making new friends, being the life of the party and having their name out there. Others prefer a small, select group of friends, being quiet with their activities and remaining unnoticed. Whatever category you fall into the second, your shy attitude doesn’t have to hold you back from expanding your personal online brand!

What Can I Say?

Communication is the key to every relationship, so to keep followers you might never otherwise encounter online you need to keep active and attentive. Not posting often enough or never sharing your own ideas makes your brand come across flat, boring and unimportant. You don’t need twitter updates every couple minutes or some profound Facebook observation. What you really need to do to maintain an active audience is presence and continued lines of communication on your networks.

Post articles about your interests, career updates, tweet about your favorite links.

There is always something to say and post about, just look around at daily news and sports, try inspirational quotes or something about what’s going on around in your city. Your profiles have followers for a reason: they want to hear what you have to say. So, put yourself out there and say it!

Can I go unnoticed forever?

The whole point of building online profiles and maintaining an online reputation is to get noticed. If your profiles and blogs collect dust, they not only go unnoticed but also reflect poorly on you. So, if you’re going to take the time to set up all your accounts then why not actually put them to work maintaining your online presence. After you’ve become active on social media or thru blogging, you’d be surprised how quick you make beneficial connections and a reason to be spending time online.

Keep It Simple.

Just be yourself, you can’t go wrong, and same goes with your online reputation. You may want to start thinking about limiting the use of vulgar language and stop posting inappropriate pictures or images, even if deleted they may return to haunt you.

Manage your online profiles always keeping in mind they’re best used when they stay active. Keep your comments and postings on track, but always insert some personality into your posts. If you care, your passion will shine through and your followers will feel more excited about your updates.

Build a strong personal brand on the web

You need a clear and consistent image of yourself on every social network you’re on. Now that people can find you, it should be obvious to them that the profile they just came upon is yours, your businesses’ or organization’s. Key factors of building and maintaining a strong brand are the immediate recognition when someone stumbles upon and is faced with your web identity. So you must ask yourself if your profiles are conveying the right message about you to clients, associates and even employers.

Always remember that the competition is always looking for digital dirt on you, so stop and think before you post or share or comment; the reputation you save is your own.

You can start taking a proactive role with these tips to clean up & promote your web identity:

Take control of your photos.

You’ve heard this before, but your personal and professional life are becoming one, largely due to Facebook. Go through what you have on your Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.…and un-tag your profile/name from photos that an employer might deem inappropriate. If you love that picture of you and your buddies keg-standing in unison, keep it private, download it to your computer and hopefully erase it from the perpetuity that is the Internet.

Keep in mind as you go through your photos that if you can’t show your parents; you don’t want your competitor or potential employer finding it.

Clean up your image

Facebook has greatly improved their privacy options. Take advantage of them and limit your posts, audience participation and access by someone outside your circle of friends. Make sure your profile pic is a professional one, tune up your feed to show relevant and mainstream news updates and set approval requirements for comments. If you have photos volunteering at events or abroad, post them.

They go a long way to help counteract any photos that might negatively impact your image.

With any of these sources, it all comes down to perception you provide. Social media has the ability to catapult your personal brand to incredible highs, in both name recognition and in its bottom line. It can also open the doors to negative comments and feedback from dissatisfied customers, endanger employment opportunities and even cause adverse effects to your love life.
